He was born in New York city moved to Tennessee where he was raised out and around ranches. He grew a pretty normal life Leader to his best bud, Jacob Sword. The two had gotten in to complete trouble, more like Ethan had dragged Jacob into loads of trouble, almost getting the dude arrested and losing a scholarship to a large Business program.
After Highschool, Ethan, being a hometown boy went into the Military with a high lieutenant status. There has trained and pretty became first class American Citizen. After 6 years dealing with Iraq and stupid government agencies with their terrible choices, he moved back to his hometown.
There he attempted to make a peaceful living, but just couldn't make the bills... So he began growing a need to get away from his hometown. Through his despair he became a drunk, a very poor broke drunk. A buddy offered him a job in Gravity Falls and he happily toke it, just to run away from his old town.
Now all Ethan does and help protect the peace in Gravity Falls. Although, if a character stalks Ethan they'll quickly learn Ethan is keeping record everything going on Gravity Falls, all the "oddities". He is certainly curious on everything going on, aren't you? Another thing, he'll hint... To his true history from time to time.
